Correction: The last sentence in last week’s column read: Thanks to Orwell for the Sandy Creek/Lacona Doctor’s book and should have read: Thanks to Orwell Historian Rose Graham for the information on the Orwell Sanatorium.

In the history of the town there have been several father and son combinations in the medical field. The first one was Dr. James A. Thompson and his son, Dr. Allen L. Thompson. The Crockett family qualifies as the second instance with Dr. Samuel J. Crockett, who belonged to the period from 1872 to 1906, and his son, Dr. Robert Lewis Crockett of the early 1900s.

Dr. Robert Lewis Crockett was born in Sandy Creek February 23, 1876; son of Dr. Samuel J. and Frances (Doolittle) Crockett. He was a graduate of Sandy Creek High School in 1894 and of Syracuse University in 1897. January 11, 1900 he married Mabel Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brewster Smith of Sandy Creek. Together they had two daughters, Mrs. W.A. Smith and Mrs. F. A. MacEwan, both of Texas and a son, Samuel B. Crockett of Texas and five grandchildren.

Dr. Robert L. Crockett practiced medicine here until about 1911, when he moved to Oneida, but even after moving away he continued a schedule which brought him to Sandy Creek at regular intervals. He was an eye, ear and throat specialist, and worked from his home on East First Street, and later in the office he maintained over what was the Foderer Market in Sandy Creek. Dr. J. R. Allen of Orwell took over at the Crockett office and devoted himself to practice here.

Dr. Crockett was a Major in the Army Medical Corps in the First World War. He was always interested in natural history and in his later years participated in expeditions to Mexico, Yucatan and the Gaspe Peninsula.

He died suddenly of a heart attack at Oneida, N.Y. May 27, 1946.
