2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the signing of the armistice that ended WWI, the War to End All Wars. Mark Slosek, Oswego City Historian, and a group of historians and volunteers are working on a project to commemorate World War I.

Names of Oswego County veterans who lost their lives in WWI will be honored by a series of events. I will have more information to follow in future columns.

Howard P. Blount, son of George R. Blount and Jessie M. Ackley, enlisted September 6. 1917. In the questionnaire for New York State he wrote he joined the Army, rank of corporal, 310 Regiment, 1st Battalion, Intelligence Section. “I was captured by the Germans and did some time in German prison camps and for a time was reported dead. I was discharged June 1919.

When he returned home he joined his father in the family business at the Blount Lumber Company. He managed the dairy of Crownhurst Farms owned by the Blount lumber Company and took great pride in the outstanding Holstein Friesian herd. On December 10, 1921 he married Dolly Harding.
