Sandy Creek News: Blount Lumber Company sells fishing rights:

Fishing rights and easements along additional streams in the Mad River area which soon may be developed as one of the state’s leading trout fishing grounds have recently been purchased from the Blount Lumber Company by New York State.

Easements sold by the Blount Lumber Company cover four miles along Mad River, as well as three miles along Beaver Creek, two and a half miles of Cold Brook and one-half mile of Gilman Creek, excellent trout streams flowing into Mad River. The state now controls land extending back 66 feet from each bank of these streams.

The state also owns fishing rights on Salmon River from Pulaski to Redfield, Mad River from Redfield about 5 miles northeast to Mad River Falls, and Cottrell brook in addition to the easements bought from the Blount Lumber Company. According to present plans the entire personnel of the CCC camp at Mannsville will be placed under the direction of the state conservation department for work in improving the streams, many of which have been posted for years.

This past weekend we dedicated a historic marker for Blount Lumber Company on DeMott Street. A book documenting the history of this company and reflecting on its importance to this town is being written.

We now have 4 historic markers within the town – The Big Cheese on Rt. 11 South, The Salisbury House Rt. 11 North and Lacona Depot on Park Street. All document a part of our history.
