Other teachers of the Sage District School were Iva Uhley; Mary G. Ehle; Inez Braarus; Louise Robbins Hollis; Leo Butterworth and  Beatrice S. Byrns (Wood) who later “closed the school” teaching the 1943-1944 school year. In 1821 the teacher’s salary for the long winter term was $42 and $12 for the easier summer term. The 1813 records show Elezar Warner, clerk; Jabez Baldwin, Zadock Baldwin and James Calkins as trustees, with a William Tryon, moderator.

A 1905 “source” says that Martha Tryon was the first school teacher in this town; that verified statement may well refer to the Sage School, which originally included all the territory south to Selkirk and west to Sandy Pond, and included the families mentioned in the 1905 list of the “first settlers in town.”

We at the History Center have been busy getting ready for the Community Bicentennial celebrations at Fort Ontario on July 3rd and the Oswego County Fair with new poster boards. The cemeteries are in good hands, some new plants have been added and watering is ongoing. Thanks to the help I receive from Peg and Corinne Rice, Margaret Kastler and Ray Cole. The “Chasing Trains - Rail City” program was a success and enjoyed by all who attended. The School book has taken a backseat to everything but I continue to edit and research it.
