Photo:“Blue School”

The One Room School book is ready for purchase and is available at the Sandy Creek Town Hall and the Village offices. The cost is $15. Many hours of research and editing has gone into this book and we are very proud of it. The book has a picture of each school, in some cases pictures of students and teachers are included. A location of each school is listed and six schools were “joint” districts. Joint School Districts were attended by children living in another town. For example: May District School No. 1,  Agricultural Hall District School No. 3 had children from Sandy Creek and Pulaski; Ormsby District School No. 2 had children from Sandy Creek and Boylston; and Good(e)nough District School No. 11, Hagen District School No. 12 and Young District School No. 15 had children from Sandy Creek and Ellisburg.

I wish to thank Phyllis LeBeau whois the consummate researcher, Jim Shutts is our photo specialist and Irene Fuller’s work with the accession files and indexing/cataloging gives us easy access to the files. Sandy Creek is so blessed with such volunteers. My friend Barbara Dix believes in serendipity and one day a copy from an auction came in of a school souvenir of “Blue School” (District 12) and a day or two later a picture of the children at this "Blue School" District 12 came into the office. Quite a find, indeed and just in time for the book!

Richard Cooper came in as he does so often with Sandy Creek information he has taken from the newspaper and this time he also had a Crownhurst milk bottle. We did not have one so we were thrilled. (The “Red Brick House” Lacona, North Ridge Road (Rt. 22) was at one time the Blount Farm - Crownhurst Dairy - delivering milk locally and was built in 1824 for Barnabas Monroe. Originally the Monroe’s settled in a log cabin just north of the Little Sandy on the North Ridge Road, before building the brick house. Barnabas was a tanner and farmer by trade, owning many acres of land in and around the villages.) Thank you for helping to save Sandy Creek history.
